India’s largest rubber
machinery manufacturer, Devdas Suvarna’s Bainite Machines Pvt.Ltd., has
made giant strides since the almost five years when we last published
a Cover Story on the company in the May/June issue 2004 (Vol.79) of
the IRJ. The Bombay-based company’s large, brand
new, large factory in Rabale in the north of the city has been a
strong symbol of its astonishing progress in the past five
years. An impressive range of high technology machines have been
added to its product range and Bainite’s roster of Indian and
international customers continues to grow, along with its abiding
commitment to R&D and cutting edge technology. Bridgestone
India, the local subsidiary of the world’s second largest tyre company,
continues to be a loyal customer. Significantly, Bainite has started
supplying directly to Continental AG in Germany, the world’s fourth
largest tyre company.
During the last five years, Bainite has strongly
reinforced its number 1 position among Indian machinery manufacturers. The
company’s participation at various international exhibitions has
further raised its global profile. Bainite continues to double its
turnover every year and has been a rock of support to start the Indian
Tyre and Rubber Industries.
Silver Jubilee
This
outstanding Indian company now celebrates its Silver Jubilee. It is hard
to believe that the company has achieved so much in just 25 years, since
it was established by Devdas Suvarna in 1983. This remarkable
metallurgical engineer from India’s premier technological institute, IIT
(Indian Institute of Technology) in Powai, is also a well respected
lecturer at international conferences on welding and metal technology and
has a special interest in the field of Tribology. Devdas Suvarna’s papers
have also been published in international journals and his deep knowledge
of metal and steel have lead to his being recognized as one of India’s top
metallurgists. He displayed great conviction and self confidence from the
very outset of his career. Declining offers from two American
Universities, he chose to stay back in the country and contribute towards
the growth of Indian industry.
Following his graduation, Suvarna spent
11 useful years in the R&D division of India’s foremost engineering
company- Larsen & Toubro (L&T). His invaluable experience in
L&T’s Eutectic Division, especially in the field of stelletising, was
the spring board that enabled him to launch his company. He named the
company Bainite and has not looked back since then.

machinery for the tyre and rubber industry and have maintained regular and
close interaction with these industries. Their wide-ranging
experience, excellent technological skills and expertise in project

R&D
The
foundation of Bainite’s growth and success appears to be the excellence of
its engineering design and development departments, which receive full
support and encouragement from top management. The company invests
in a regular and substantial manner to provide the most appropriate and
updated infrastructure and facilities for its highly qualified
personnel. Even the new Bainite facility in Rabale has been equipped
with the latest generation computers and software in the form of working
programs and tools. The company says its cutting edge facilities and
tools enable the design of complicated machinery within a short period of
time, while its engineers are capable of assembling the various parts of
machines on a virtual platform, assessing the compatibility and
functionality with respect to each other. Thus the complete assembly
can be generated on solid modeling and can also be shown in motion, in
virtual use.
The establishment of its impressive R&D facility at
Rabale has contributed significantly to Bainite’s ability to manufacture
state of art machines, in terms of productivity, reliability and
durability. The company has earned a well deserved reputation for
its sturdy machinery, which have been likened to rugged work horses-
albeit on a highly advanced technological level.
